1 Bacteria which causes diseases


You use hands for doing all the stuff, including wiping your ass with them, so they are the ideal place for bacteria, harmful bacteria to thrive. Some of the examples are like salmonella and E. coli which love to nest under your finger nails.

When you bite your nails, these bacteria get transferred from the nails to your mouth. This can lead to harmful infections in your body. Since finger nails are difficult to clean, they may be dirtier than your fingers.

It’s often proposed that people who bite their nails tend to have stronger immune systems, and they also get sick less than those who do not.

One probable clarification for this is that nail biting may help familiarize bacteria and pathogens from your environment to your immune system. It helps the immune system to get familiar to those pathogens and build sturdy defences against them, comparable to what occurs when people eat their boogers.

People those who bite nails are vulnerable to paronychia, a skin infection that occurs around your nails. Nail chewing can lead to bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms to go in through tiny tears or abrasions, leading to swelling, redness, and pus around your nail.

The condition is very painful and only option is to surgically drains the fluid. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), infections caused by bacteria due to nail biting habits are a pretty common problem.

3 HPV infections that can cause warts

There is a very harmful bacterium called the human papillomavirus or HPV which causes warts to form on the fingers and are a chronic problem for nail biters. This HPV can enter your body thanks to your nail biting habit.

Biting or picking your nails could also lead to temporary or permanent effects to your actual nail. The bulk of the fingernail is produced in the area of the nail bed called the lunula.

The fingernail is made there, as well as the area beneath the lunula that extends down underneath the skin. So if you end up with a lot of swelling or an infection of that skin, where the fingernail is made, you can start making an improper fingernail and end up with a fingernail that’s bumpy or misshapen.

4 It can cause teeth problems
If a kid keeps biting the nails, it can affect how the teeth grow out. They may shift out of their proper position and may not come together when you close your mouth. Biting your teeth may also wear them down and also weaken them over the time.

5 Decreased quality of life
People who bite their nails are often reported to have an impaired quality of life as compared to people who do not bite their nails.

The level of impairment increases with the time spent of biting the nails. It also depends on the number of fingernails involved and visible nail abnormalities.
