8 “Healthy” Habits Which Are Causing You To Gain Weight

As a matter of fact, there are many different myths in regard to this issue, and in fact, they can lead to weight gain. Weight-watchers and people who are trying to eat healthy should find good advice which is scientifically supported and backed by actual medical research.

We present you the 8 weight loss habits which actually have the opposite effect, meaning they lead to weight gain. They are more than helpful, so the next time you are trying out a new diet or making some changes in your eating habits, take these common weight loss myths into consideration.

1. Eating a High-Protein Diet
It is not recommended to eat a meaty meal late in the evening, as your digestive system slows down overnight. In fact, the wrong kind of food you eat late is not used as fuel, but it gets stored as fat instead. This fat is very difficult to lose and you don’t want it accumulated in your body!

Therefore, try to avoid these types of foods and consequently, you will feel much lighter the next morning.

2. Eating Low- Fat Foods
Most people turn to foods labeled as “low fat” as they allegedly help lose weight. However, it turns out that this is everything but a good idea, as these foods are not what they are claimed to be.

According to a recent study, about 10 percent of the diet foods contain the same amount of calories or even more calories than the regular stuff. Moreover, even 40 percent of them contain more sugar.

This is not all! When food manufacturers remove fat from their products, they add more salt, sugar, and artificial additives in order to enrich their taste. It turns out that these additives are more harmful than the fat in the first place.

Finally, a research has shown that a “low-fat” label easily makes people overeat, especially the ones who are overweight. Of course, this defeats the entire purpose of your goal to lose weight and eat healthy, right?

3. Avoiding Fat
As already mentioned above, most people turn to low-fat foods and try to avoid fat as much as possible. However, few people can differentiate between healthy and unhealthy fat. It is important to mention that your daily calorie intake should contain at least 20 percent of fat.

Healthy Fats:

  • Coconut oil
  • Extra virgin coconut oil
  • Fatty fish
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Saturated fats
  • Shea butter
  • Whole eggs
  • Avocado
  • These healthy fats can actually help you lose weight.

Unhealthy Fats:

  • Baked goods
  • Fried food
  • Processed snack food
  • Margarine
  • Transfats
  • Vegetable shortening
  • Vegetable cooking oil
  • Hydrogenated fats

The aforementioned unhealthy fats are the ones you need to avoid!

4. Avoiding Snacks
This can be a good or bad thing, depending on the type of snacks you eat. According to many nutritionists, you should eat couple of snacks during the day. In fact, you need 5-6 small meals divided throughout the day properly, as this will improve your digestion, keep your metabolism moving, and boost the weight loss process.

5. Avoiding Carbohydrates
Low-carb diets are all the rage nowadays and most people turn to them when they want to get rid of the extra pounds. Even though some of them can be very helpful when it comes to shredding few extra pounds, it has been scientifically shown that they can be bad for your health in the long run.

Namely, a very low-carb diet can result in imbalanced intestinal flora. By avoiding carbs, you are avoiding many important probiotics as well, including resistant starch and soluble fiber.

These probiotics are very important as they support the growth of beneficial intestinal flora. Lack of these probiotics disables the flora from producing as much gut-healing substances. Moreover, the microbiome composition may shift in an undesirable direction as well.

Your overall health heavily depends on the health of your intestines. In fact, unhealthy intestines contribute to skin disorders, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, obesity, digestive issues, and many other health issues. You should aim at getting enough healthy carbohydrates from good sources, such as fruits and vegetables.

6. Salad is Healthy
Most people thing that salad is healthy and safe choice. However, this is not always the case.  Even the humble green salad can be turned into an unhealthy meal, if you add some salad dressing high in fat or some friend or processed meal.

If you want healthy salad, stay away from mayo! Prepare your own salad dressing with some apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, extra virgin oil, and a bit of honey. Also, focus on healthy ingredients, such as dark leafy greens, fresh vegetables, and fruits.

7. Counting Calories
Even though it is very popular, counting calories is not the best option when it comes to losing weight. It seems logical to benefit from cutting down calories, as eating a lot of food makes it harder for you to lose weight. However, this is not the most important thing you should take into consideration when you try to lose weight.  As a matter of fact, counting calories doesn’t mean that you are free to eat whatever you want.

Many people face this problem when they are counting calories. Granola bars and energy bars which are sold as “low-calories” are actually everything but helpful, as they are processed foods.

8. Working Out While Hungry
Skipping a meal prior workout is a common mistake that many people do in the attempt to burn more fat. In fact, many people think that if they deprive their body of fuel prior the workout, this will result in increased amount of burned calories. However, this is not a good idea, as the body needs fuel.

For instance, a glass of green juice is a good idea, as it keeps you feeling full and it provides the needed energy for the workout. It also helps you burn fats later on, while you are sleeping.

To sum up, if you are experiencing some issues while trying to lose weight, make sure you are not making some of the mistakes outlined above. So, the next time you start a new diet, consider these myths. Let`s be honest! There is not shortcut to losing weight. You simply have to eat healthy and lose the extra pounds naturally.  In fact, you don’t need to change the diet completely. Simply combine the healthy meal plan with some moderate exercise.
